Samsung XR Headset Nears Launch with 16GB RAM, Android 14

by | Aug 27, 2024 | Galaxy XR, News

After teasing it earlier this year, Samsung recently confirmed that its first extended reality (XR) headset will arrive before the end of 2024. While a precise launch date is still missing, the anticipation is slowly building. The yet-to-be-named device just surfaced on a benchmarking platform to reveal some interesting details, including the processor, RAM, and Android version.

Geekbench reveals the Samsung XR headset’s processor and more specs

Leaks have long revealed that Samsung’s unnamed XR headset will bear the model number SM-I130. Its controller allegedly has the model number SM-I610. The former recently appeared on the popular benchmarking platform Geekbench. We spotted seven benchmark entries for the device with similar scores. The single-core scores range between 1,054 and 1,088, while the multi-core scores range between 2,047 and 2,093.

The processor powering the device has six CPU cores, all operating at a 2.36GHz frequency. It appears to be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. Announced in January 2024, it is a high-end chipset designed for XR and VR applications. The SoC offers a 4.3K resolution per eye with up to 90 frames per second, delivering exceptionally clear visuals in all scenarios. It also supports 12+ concurrent cameras for hand and body tracking.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 boasts 12ms full-color video see-through and supports LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, Bluetooth v5.3, Wi-Fi 7, and 8K video encoding and decoding. It offers next-gen Spectra ISP and AI applications. The chip is well-equipped to power advanced XR headsets like Samsung’s upcoming device. The benchmark listing reveals the headset has 16GB of RAM and runs Android 14-based software.

This appearance on Geekbench suggests the upcoming XR headset is nearing its launch. Rumors say Samsung will introduce a developer version of the device in October this year. It’ll send development kits to developers so they can build or import their apps and games to the headset. A public version could arrive later in the year or early 2025. There are also rumors of Samsung redesigning the Galaxy S25 Ultra with the XR headset in mind, so maybe it’ll arrive alongside the new flagships next year. We shall find out in the coming months.
