Samsung continues its commitment to user security by rolling out the August security update for its Galaxy Note 20 series, which turned four this month. This latest update brings several critical and high-severity patches to protect the last two Note-branded phones from various vulnerabilities. The August SMR (Security Maintenance Release) contains 50 security patches and has already reached dozens of other devices.
Galaxy Note 20 phones grab Samsung’s August security update
Launched in August 2020, the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are the last and only Note-branded phones still supported by Samsung. The company is still offering monthly security patches to the devices, which is amazing considering their age. Features updates have ended, but we aren’t complaining since Samsung only promised three major Android OS updates and four years of security patches.
The two Note phones recently received the August SMR in the US. The update is available for carrier-locked and unlocked units on several carrier networks, with the remaining few expected to join the party soon. The new firmware build numbers for the two variants are N98*USQS9HXH1 and N98*U1UES9HXH1, respectively. As you might expect, the update doesn’t bring anything more than the latest security fixes.
The August SMR will gradually expand to the Galaxy Note 20 duo in other markets. Technically, this is the last official update for the phones, but Samsung may extend support by a year. It is still updating the Galaxy S20 series into the fifth year. The frequency of updates has dropped from monthly to quarterly, but the company hasn’t ended support. The Galaxy Note 20 series should get the same treatment.
If you are using this aging phone, you should consider upgrading to a newer model. For Note lovers, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is a perfect replacement. Samsung also has the Galaxy S25 Ultra coming up in a few months. It’s said to bring a redesign to the Ultra lineup, packed with other huge hardware upgrades.
