Samsung recently introduced a feature that lets you set a custom wake-up phrase for its Bixby voice assistant. The feature shipped with the Galaxy S25 series but is now making its way to older Galaxy devices with the One UI 7.0 update. Samsung Galaxy S24 owners running One UI 7.0 beta can set a custom phrase to wake up Bixby. However, the feature is surprisingly missing on the Galaxy S23 series.
Bixby is Samsung’s voice assistant, like Apple’s Siri or Google Assistant. It enables Galaxy users to execute certain functions like sending messages, setting alarms, and checking the weather over voice commands. By default, you wake up Bixby with the phrase “Hi, Bixby,” or simply “Bixby”. However, if you have a Galaxy S25 or S24 series device device running One UI 7.0, you can customize the wake-up phrase to anything else.
The Galaxy S23 series doesn’t have Bixby custom wake-up phrase
Unfortunately, on the Galaxy S23, the custom wake-up phrase for the Bixby voice assistant is not available. The feature is missing from the Bixby Labs settings page on the S23 lineup. It looks like Samsung is artificially limiting this feature to the Galaxy S24 series and newer models, as a custom wake-up phrase for Bixby shouldn’t require a massively powerful NPU. Or maybe Samsung plans to introduce this feature later, we don’t know.

The Galaxy S23 series supports a vast majority of much more complicated and demanding AI features. It has access to Call Assist, Writing Assist, Interpreter, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Photo Assist, and even Drawing Assist. These features are much more demanding than the simple wake-up call for the voice assistant.
It doesn’t make sense for Samsung to not include the custom wake-up phrase feature. This feels like a business decision to limit software features, which will encourage users to upgrade to newer models. Hopefully, Samsung will add this feature soon to older Galaxy phones. The Galaxy S23 is currently running the beta builds of One UI 7.0. There is a chance that Samsung might add it to future betas or with the stable release.
