Samsung often files patents for its innovative technology, though not all of them make it to market. Now, the Korean firm has been granted a new design patent that, if realized into a commercial product, could revolutionize smartphone cameras. The patent shows a unique display with a repositionable camera system that allows a single camera to move between the front and back of a display. Isnโt it a crazy smartphone design idea?
Samsung secures patent for repositionable camera system
The patent for the repositionable camera system design was filed in the US Designs IP Portal on January 10, 2022. Samsung has now obtained the approval of the patent under the code D1066344. It describes a dual-position camera mechanism, letting the camera system shift between the front and the back of the smartphone. The repositionable camera system could be integrated into foldable or rollable display devices.
This innovative mechanism eliminates the need to integrate both front and rear camera setups separately. More importantly, users will be able to take high-quality photos with the front camera, as the rear camera will also function as a selfie camera. It seems that Samsung may be working on improving camera placement within a display.
It is worth noting that Samsung had filed similar design applications back in May 2019. So, thereโs little chance the company may pursue this product in the future. While it has potential to revolutionize cameras, there is no guarantee Samsung will ever commercialize this technology. The firm previously obtained design patents for a curved display to improve durability and a new tri-folding flip phone/tablet with S Pen support.
As of now, the South Korean giant is gearing up to launch its first tri-fold device, the Galaxy G Fold. It could debut at the second unpacked event of the year, which usually takes place in July.
