As an e-commerce giant, Amazon has the resources to build products and shut them down if they donโt meet user demands. While it is indeed a leader in e-commerce, the firm has experimented with various business ventures to stay relevant. Some of them succeeded, and others didnโt. Recently, Amazon announced that it will shut down its Amazon Appstore for Android in August this year.
Amazon is bidding goodbye to its Android Appstore in August
The Amazon Appstore launched in March 2011 and has served users well for nearly 14 years. In fact, itโs been an alternative to the Google Play Store for quite a while. At one point, Amazon even partnered with Microsoft to integrate the store into Windows 11, making it easier to access Android apps. However, that collaboration is ending next month. With it, the Windows 11 Amazon Appstore will also mark the end of the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA).
The Amazon Appstore will shut down on August 20, 2025. After that date, users will no longer be able to access the store on their Android devices. Additionally, the Amazon Coins program will be discontinued, and users will no longer be able to buy the digital currency starting February 20, 2025. Amazon Coins were used for in-app purchases and games, and any remaining Coins in accounts at the time of shutdown will be refunded.
Amazon has also started notifying developers about the shutdown, which will only affect users who manually installed the Appstore on their Android devices. People using Fire Tablets, Fire TVs, and other Amazon devices will still have access to the store.
I honestly donโt remember installing the Amazon Appstore or downloading apps from it on any of my Android devices recently. The Google Play Store and Galaxy Store have been enough for my needs. But do you use the Amazon Appstore instead of the Galaxy Store or Play Store?
