Samsung may upgrade its clamshell foldable lineup to the Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) display technology this year. The upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7 allegedly features this tech for enhanced brightness and efficiency. The Fold lineup has employed CoE since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 uses CoE for enhanced display brightness and efficiency
CoE technology is rapidly replacing circular polarizers in OLED displays as the main method for reducing screen glare and reflections, particularly on foldables. Industry estimates suggest nearly 90% of foldable smartphones will adopt CoE by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 33% from 2024.
While COE has higher reflectivity, it offers key advantages like better brightness, lower power use, longer panel lifespan, and a wider color range. It also has a thinner design and puts less stress on screens, making it ideal for foldable devices. Samsung has been using this advanced display tech on its Fold series foldables since 2021 and plans to upgrade the Flip lineup this year.
The confirmation comes from Ross Young, a display industry veteran and the founder of DisplaySearch and DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants). “Z Flip 7 will have CoE for the first time like the Z Fold 3-6 which significantly boosts brightness/efficiency by removing the polarizer,” Young posted on X. He is currently a VP at Counterpoint Research.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 may not increase the peak brightness beyond 2,600 nits, CoE support should make it more efficient. Samsung kept the brightness unchanged on the Galaxy S25 series as well, but the new flagships still bring notable improvements in the overall display quality. To be fair, 2,600 nits is quite bright.
Moreover, Samsung’s revolutionary anti-reflective screen technology makes the screen much more legible. The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s screen looks brighter than phones with a much higher peak brightness under direct sunlight. Too bad Samsung doesn’t offer this technology on all flagships, but only on Ultra models. Anyways, the new Galaxy foldables look set for major upgrades, so stay tuned.
