Samsung Plays a Major Role in Nvidia’s Latest RTX 50-series GPUs

by | Jan 9, 2025 | News

There have been some exciting announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025. One such comes from Nvidia, which announced the GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs during the show. It’s a behemoth in itself, featuring GDDR7 VRAM, which will be manufactured by multiple partners, including Samsung.

Jensen Huang confirms Nvidia’s RTX 50 series will use Samsung-made GDDR7 memory

Nvidia chief Jensen Huang confirmed Samsung’s involvement during the presentation, saying, “The GeForce RTX 50 series features high-speed GDDR7 memory manufactured by multiple partners, starting with Samsung.” Unlike other models that use 28 Gbps GDDR7 memory, the RTX 5080 takes it up a notch with 30 Gbps GDDR7 memory. To meet demand, Nvidia is teaming up with several DRAM suppliers, including Samsung and Micron.

Samsung was the first to announce GDDR7 memory, wrapping up development by mid-2023 and likely kicking off production later that year. The final GDDR7 specs were released earlier in 2023. These chips offer a massive boost in bandwidth, delivering up to 1.5TB/s — 40% more than GDDR6 — thanks to a 32Gbps per-pin speed, made possible by PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) signaling.

Samsung earns praise from Godfather of AI

Jensen Huang has made quite a name for himself, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI.” While 2024 was a tough year for Samsung, Nvidia managed to leapfrog Apple to become the most valuable company in the world. However, Apple recently reclaimed that top spot. Whether Nvidia will bounce back and retake it is still up in the air, but it sure seems like the AI giant is putting some serious pressure on Cupertino.

At the same event, Nvidia chief showered Samsung with praise. He said the company has what it takes to succeed by engineering a new design. Quoting Jensen Huang, Bloomberg reported, “They have to engineer a new design. But they can do it. They’re working very fast. They’re very committed to doing it.” Huang was confident, adding, “They’re going to succeed — no question. I have confidence that Samsung will succeed with HBM.”
